Treatments to Revitalize the Face and Eliminate Marionette Lines
One of the common side effects of aging is a loss of skin elasticity and a loss of facial volume. These are likely to result in the formation of deep lines and creases. One part of the face that is vulnerable to these creases is the mouth and chin area. When deep creases form between the corner of the mouth and extend downward to the lower face and chin, they are often referred to as “marionette lines,” as they mimic the exaggerated facial lines found on old-fashioned puppets. Topical Creams
The least invasive treatment for marionette lines is the use of topical creams. However, patients should also understand that topical creams offer the least dramatic results, so they are best suited for patients with only faint marionette lines. Most patients try topical creams or lotions as an initial treatment or one that will help them postpone the need for more invasive treatment. These creams often contain some combination of retinol, collagen, and alpha-hydroxy acid. These ingredients help to add some elasticity and volume to the skin.
Dermal Fillers
Dermal fillers offer a non-surgical solution for patients who have more advanced or deep-set marionette lines. There are a range of fillers to choose from, including Restylane®, JUVÉDERM™ Injectable Gel, Radiesse®, and ArteFill®. These fillers add volume to fill out facial features and smooth or eliminate creases and marionette lines. Although the results of dermal fillers will not be permanent, they can be long-lasting, with some creating results that last up to one year before treatment needs to be repeated.
Facelift
Patients who have the most severe marionette lines and those looking for the longest lasting treatment should consider a facelift. A facelift addresses a number of concerns by manipulating the facial muscles, lifting and tightening the skin, and restoring a full, refreshed appearance to facial features. A facelift will not only eliminate marionette lines, but will also improve the overall appearance of the mid to lower face. A facelift can take years off a patient’s facial appearance and the results will last for many years to come.
